In any profession, the analogy of sharks and dolphins swimming in the same waters is a metaphor to describe the challenges of leadership.

K.R. Miller has served in the field of education at the secondary, middle, and elementary levels. He has been a superintendent, principal, assistant principal, activities director, coach, teacher, and nationally recognized motivational speaker. His book shares a message of hope, vision, and making dreams a reality.

It is rare that an educator has the breadth of experience at all grade levels, uniquely giving the author a true perspective of the whole educational continuum.

Every school where he worked became a positive, friendly, spontaneous, and accomplished place. The contagious shift of the environment created endless opportunities for teachers and students to grow, in spite of budget cuts and the difficult task of selecting financial priorities.

Working with school teams to generate revenue, and promoting a message of confidence and optimism, represent the highlights of his career. In 2005, he became an advocate for small school districts, speaking to the business community on their behalf, and serving at the state level as a regional representative for the Small School Districts Association.

At an early age, he identified education as his true vocation and never departed from that path. It is impossible to include all the stories that occur at schools on a daily basis, so only a sampling of his career dedicated to helping others is presented.

First-time author K.R. Miller is now retired and lives in Florida. He grew up fifteen miles from San Francisco, living in a small town called El Cerrito. "Whenever I am near mountains, the fog, and cold weather, fond memories of that childhood arise."

Swimming with Sharks and Dolphins A 425 Year Journey in Education K R Miller 9781681816838 Books

Most of us who have taught or been in administration will identify with virtually all of the stories in this book. This book made me realize that regardless of where we taught, the experiences we face are all similar. Miller's personal style is reflected in his many stories. He blends touching, poignant, and humorous ways that affect his readers. I think this should be required reading for future administrators as it will remind them how we treat others has greater effect on our success than all the curricular and educational jargon training most rely on. Gosh, what a concept....you mean in the supreme "people business" a principal with a heart and common sense is a better leader? We need more Mr. Millers in our schools. I want to personally thank the author for taking the time to share his lifelong experiences. Fun book to read!

Swimming with Sharks and Dolphins A 425 Year Journey in Education K R Miller 9781681816838 Books Reviews

Ken Miller's book "Swimming with Sharks and Dolphins" is an altogether inspiring, humorous, and sobering look at his journey over a forty-two year career in the field of education. While each chapter is written like a short story, the delightful collection is connected and reads like a fast paced saga. Each tale chronicles a different incident that will amuse and encourage (like dolphins do) or kindle thoughtful consideration of many of life's challenges; i.e. how to stay positive even when faced with demanding trials (the sharks). The chapter titled "Oh For Goodness Sake!" teaches us that a non-antagonistic response phrase is an important coping mechanism that all must have in their bag of skills.. and that [we] need to be able to forgive those who hurt [us] in thoughts, words, and deeds." More sage advice? "Eat prunes." Yes, he writes that. Find out why. "Part Two of the Book on Sailing Tack against the Wind" reminds us to "...not seek storms. They will find you all by themselves." Chapter 30 - "The Gophers Are Gaining On Us" is a humorous story of how creative thinking and courage can break down imposed barriers. He writes, "It is important to include a creative sense of humor to make a point when situations seem serious and unsolvable..." Every page inspires. With pen in hand, I actively read this book from cover to cover and marked something encouraging on almost every page. I loved it so much I didn't want to put it down and I didn't want it to end. A definite "must read" even if you're not in the field of education.
A fun, easy read about the inside scoop of education. Includes helpful tips and interesting stories.
Mr. Miller's stories and experiences take the reader along for the ride of his journey using humor while pulling on the heart strings as well. His descriptions help make many of the intricacies and bureaucracies of education understandable to the parent, community member, or new educator. To the fellow seasoned educator, the stories ring true and make the reader reminisce on his or her own stories and experiences. The book is a great read to anyone who is in a leadership role as well as Mr. Miller expertly describes the transition from the bottom to the top.
This book proved to be an enjoyable read. The author, K R Miller, provides us with pithy insights of living and career advice in a funny, informal way that does not seem preachy. He makes the reader feel like he/she is just sitting with an old friend, listening to the adventures of a storyteller - but in this case, the stories are all true! Miller recounts his career rise from student teacher to School District Superintendent speaking candidly and informally on how he overcame obstacles in life and career with humor, determination, an open mind, and some really inventive educational programs. He also shares his experiences on how to learn and grow, getting beyond those times when one's judgment is less than stellar. K R Miller passes along his wisdom with a myriad of situations that will have you laughing and at times, weeping. He shares his highs and lows and lessons learned passing along to those who read his book sound methods to incorporate into their own lives and career growth. Anyone can benefit from his insightful message especially, if one's goal is to take on a leadership role in an educational system, then this is a must-read.
